Frequently Asked Questions for Hire and Drive option

Do I need a special licence?

No - a current car driver's licence is all you need.

Can anyone drive a houseboat, even if I have not driven a houseboat before?

Yes - as long as you are over 18 years of age and have a full car license. On arrival you will be instructed on the operation and navigation of your houseboat by a fully licenced operator. You will then be taken on a short orientation cruise to make sure you are comfortable handling the craft.

How many people are allowed on 'Moving Waters'?

Maritime regulations state the number of persons on board must not exceed the number of berths, being 10. Children under 12 months of age are not included in the count.

How much bond do I have to pay and when do I get it back?

Bond is $1500. The bond will be refunded within 14 days, if the boat is returned on time and in suitable condition, less fuel charges.
Please note that our insurance excess is $2000, therefore if major damages occur to the houseboat, an additional bond of $500 plus fuel charges will need to be paid PRIOR to departure from the houseboat

Are houseboat holidays suitable for children?

Yes - houseboats are fantastic for family holidays. There is so much to do on a houseboat for families - swimming, fishing, exploring the bush at your mooring location, kayaking on the main river and in the backwater creek system, collecting wood and cooking on the campfire (when there is no fire ban) and watching wildlife in their natural environment.  If you have a dinghy or speedboat, water sports including kneeboarding, wakeboarding or skiing can be enjoyed also.

Is there enough water in the river for a houseboat holiday and if so, how far can we travel?

There is plenty of water in the river for you to enjoy a houseboat holiday from Renmark. You can travel a good distance in the time that you have on board - remember though you have to travel back again! We recommend that you travel upstream as it is a very beautiful part of the river and there are many mooring spots to choose from. We prefer that you don't travel downstream as there are some very shallow spots to navigate and there are less river access points for us to provide you assistance if required. The other thing to consider by going downstream is that the Paringa Bridge has to be booked in to be lifted so that you can get through (opening times are either 9.30am or 2.30pm on most days of the year) and you will also have to go through Lock 5 shortly after.

Can I travel at night on the river?

No - Houseboats cannot be driven after sunset.

Fuel Costs - How much will I use and what will it cost?

Fuel usage depends on weather (eg wind), how fast and how far you travel. The most economical speed is around 2600-2800 revs and the boat will use approximately 10 litres/hour. Fuel is also used for the generator. Please remember that we have 6.74kw of solar panels and 24kwh of lithium ion battery storage on the houseboat which can greatly help reduce generator run time.
